The International Museum of Art & Science and the San Antonio Museum of Art have come together to bring the public of the Rio Grande Valley a very special exhibit of French artist Henri Fantin-Latour’s works on paper. Fantin-Latour: French Impressionist Works from the San Antonio Museum of Art are partly inspired by Richard Wagner’s four-part opera Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the
Nibelung), which tells the story of a magical ring that grants its possessor the power to rule the world.
Since Fantin-Latour’s death in 1904, these works have only been on display to the public twice in a one hundred year span. The International Museum of Art & Science is proud to bring these beautiful and precious works for a limited time. They will make their third appearance in history at IMAS beginning Thursday, February 16, 2012 in which a FREE opening reception will be held from 6:00p.m. - 8:00p.m.
Fantin-Latour’s work has been shown in over 50 museums around the globe, including the Met, Le Louvre, Musee D’Orsay, the Tate and the National Gallery in London. His work derives from his appreciation of music; thus, he counts as a pioneer symbolist, a painter and draughtsman who found a new anti-naturalist style that paved the way for the symbolism movement in literature.
