OUR VISION
TO MAKE DRAMATIC IMPROVEMENT IN LITERACY LEVELS IN THE BROWNSVILLE AREA.
MISSION STATEMENT
BROWNSVILLE LITERACY CENTER EXISTS TO PROMOTE LITERACY IN THE BROWNSVILLE AREA BY PROVIDING APPROPRIATE AND ACCESSIBLE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS DESIGNED TO MEET THE NEEDS OF UNDERSERVED ADULTS AND FAMILIES.

OUR HISTORY
THE BROWNSVILLE LITERACY CENTER (BLC) IS A PRIVATE NON-PROFIT ADULT AND FAMILY LITERACY PROVIDER ESTABLISHED IN 1986 IN RESPONSE TO THE PROFOUND, UNMET LITERACY NEEDS OF THE BROWNSVILLE COMMUNITY. THE CENTER IS FUNDED BY PRIVATE CHARITABLE AND CORPORATE DONATIONS, THE UNITED WAY OF SOUTHERN CAMERON COUNTY, A COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT BLOCK GRANT (CDBG) AND TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING AND COMMUNITY AFFAIRS (TDHCA).

THE LITERACY CENTER HAS DEVELOPED A CLASSROOM PROGRAM WHICH IS DESIGNED TO GIVE STUDENTS A SOLID FOUNDATION IN COMMUNICATIVE, FUNCTIONAL ENGLISH PERTINENT TO ADULTS.

IN 1999, THE CENTER INTRODUCED A FAMILY LITERACY PROGRAM, WHICH ALLOWS PARENTS AND THEIR CHILDREN TO LEARN TOGETHER. THIS APPROACH ENABLES THE ADULTS TO DEVELOP ENGLISH LITERACY SKILLS AND THE CHILDREN TO BUILD PRE-READING AND LANGUAGE SKILLS.
